Listed below are a small number of the many programs students have the opportunity to participate in every summer. The ones listed below are from summer of 2011, but they will give an idea of what is available. As new information arrives in the counseling office, it will be updated. A NEW will be placed next to each one for the Summer of 2012. AFS Intercultural Programs works toward a more just and peaceful world by providing international and intercultural learning experiences to individuals, families, schools, and communities through a global volunteer partnership.To learn more go to www.afsusa.org. Mrs. Brennan can nominate you. Auburn University Summer Youth Program is committed to providing a rich and exciting learning environment. The following camps are available: -
Musical Theatre Camp (July 18-23): Designed for music, theatre, dance and show choir students interested in the field of musical theatre, which includes music, dance, movement, and acting. -
Veterinarian Camp (June 6-11 for juniors; June 13-18 for seniors): Learn about the role of vets in Public Health, First Aid skills for helping animals in emergency situations, anatomy and imaging. -
World Affairs Youth Seminar (July 18-23): Appeals to students with interest in public speaking, debate, Model UN, social studies, international affairs, current events, government, politics, leadership, and/or public service. -
Architecture Camp (June 6-11 & July 11-16): Begins with basic design concepts and ends with an architectural design project. Participants will have studio space and access to computers. -
Building Construction Camp (June 20-25): Learn construction basics and how to integrate building design with site, climate, function, and "green" considerations. -
Design Camp (June 13-18): Great for students interested in a professional career in design. Each day is filled with hands-on designs, technical demonstrations, and professional guest speakers. Studio space will be available. -
CSI: Auburn--Computer Forensics Camp (July 19-23): Gain real experience investigating computer crimes and processing digital evidence. -
TIGERS Engineering Camp (June 6-11 for seniors and June 13-18 for juniors): Get exposed to the world of engineering. Most engineering majors will be covered. To learn more about each program, go to www.auburn.edu/summeryouthprograms. Babson Summer Study Programs for High School Students is offering some new programs for outstanding high school students. These two seven-week, residential programs taking place from July 5-August 19 will give students the opportunity to focus on entrepreneurial or social ventures. Targeted at high-achieving students entering their junior or senior year, each of these courses is taught by their top-ranked, full-time faculty in a challenging, campus environment. Students can earn college credits. Students entering their sophomore year may participate in this one-week, non-residential experience from June 27 to July 1. This program focused on social outreach does not provide college credit. To apply for any of the programs, please go to www.summerstudy.babson.edu. Barnard College Summer in New York City gives students the Barnard Pre-College advantage. Some topics include are Architecture, Art, International Affairs, Music, Theatre and Film, etc. They offer a four-week program and several one-week options. Boston University will offer an intensive experience in creative mathematical exploration to approximately 65 ambitious high school students with an exceptionally strong interest in mathematics. It's called PROMYS (Program in Mathematics for Young Scientists). It is a 6 week residential program. Financial aid is available. Applications are online at www.promys.org. Applications are being accepted until May 30, 2011. Cambridge College Programme at Cambridge University, Cambridge, England, is in its 24th Anniversary of summer programmes in Academics and leadership including an optional trip to Paris. Sixty-five courses, excursions to London (4), Stonehenge, Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon, sports and evening activities are offered every night. For additional information and to enroll contact: www.cambridgecollegeprogramme.org. This is a program for high achieving high school scholars. Students may be in their freshman through senior year. They will receive a written evaluation and letter grade for each course from their lecturers, which will be brought back by the student to be included with his/her high school transcript and to be sent to colleges/universities with the applications. Many students have received credit for completion of these courses from the colleges. This program is very helpful as a pre-college experience and for applying to US colleges and universities as well. NEW! Carleton Summer Science Institute: Students will learn to think and write like scientists by engaging in classroom and hands-on research related to their interests. Carleton Summer Writing Program: Students will learn to write effective academic essays. This program is designed for college-bound junior with strong reading and writing skills. Carleton Liberal Arts Experience (CLAE): This program is an introduction to college life and to the strengths of a liberal arts education. Students must be nominated by an educator. They are looking for 10th grade students who will complete their sophomore year of high school by June 15, 2011, are in the top 25% of their class, are taking a challenging college-prep curriculum, and have been involved in their community. Students of African American descent or students interested in African American culture are encouraged to apply for this program. Cornell University Summer College wants you to experience the excitement of college life, take fascinating college courses, get a head start on college, explore careers and academic majors, enhance your college applications and participate in admissions workshops, and make friends from around the world. Applicants must be rising juniors or seniors in high school. They should be highly motivated and committed to engaging in college-level work during the summer. The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising (FIDM) is offering hands-on workshops at FIDM's 3-Day Events in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orange County, and San Diego. EXPLORE careers in Fashion, Merchandising, Product Development, Design, Styling, Special Events, and Shoe Design. EXPERIENCE workshops like Draping the Dress, where you will create a three-dimensional design on a fitting form; Concept to Consumer, which focuses on design and merchandising; and Creating a Promotional Campaign, where you will work on a photo shoot and a special event. Free Enterprise Leadership Challenge (FELC) is designed just for high school students and empowers participants to experience busines and economics first-hand. This program is offered for the first time this summer on the campus of Houston Baptist University from July 10-14. Students will learn about free market economics first-hand as they form companies by working in small groups. They receive hands-on instruction to create business and marketing plans, pay taxes and maintain accounting records. Speakers who aer community and busines leaders visit with students to share advice, wisdom and personal stories of success (and failures). The FELC curriculum strongly encourages ethical leadership, personal responsibility and philanthropy. This is a real world experience! Go to their website to learn more at www.felcexperience.org. Freedom Alliance Military Leadership Academy is a program for high school students who are goal oriented and serious about a career in the military. During the summer sessions, the cadets will gain confidence and practical life skills from being faced with, and overcoming, mentally and physically challenging obstacles. Whether you are interested in getting a glimpse of military life or seeking an adventure beyond the average summer camp, join the ranks of the Military Academy. Hollins University Summer Programs are for young ladies only. Programs like "Explorations in Forensic Chemistry", "Exploring Digital Storytelling", "Psychology: The Human Mind", "Video Production", etc. will be offered. Houston Chronicle and the University of Houston are sponsoring a free,four-week summer workshop for high school students who are interested in journalism and who will be senior this fall. The classes will be conducted by staff reporters, editors, photographers, and graphic artists from the Houston Chronicle, many of whom have extensive teaching experience. They will cover reporting, writing, editing and interviewing practices and principles, videography, blogs, photojournalism, graphics, and newspaper and web site design. The students will write extensively in the class and will get solid reporting and interviewing experiences. The final project will be student production of a newspaper. An application can be downloaded from the Chronicle Web site at http://www.chron.com/hjw. The class will be limited to 20 students, so it is important for those interested to get their applications in by the April 15 deadline. Students completing the workshop will be eligible to compete for three Houston Chronicle $1,000 scholarships. Interlochen Arts Camp for Grades 3-12 runs from June-August 2010. Located in Northwest Michigan, 3,000 artists from 50 states and 40 countries attend to be a part of this program. Apply by Feb. 1 at www.camp.interlochen.org. NEW! Junior Volunteer Program at Memorial Hermann The Woodlands and other local hospitals--If you want to be in the medical field, look into this opportunity. Students are required to put in 160 hours of volunteer work. It's a great way to get your feet wet. Landmark College at Southern Oregon University is offering a summer program for high school students with learning disabilities and AD/HD. It is July 10-July 30 in Ashland, OR. Landmark College is nationally recognized as the college of choice for students with learning disabilities and AD/HD. The college has 25 years of leadership in developing innovative academic strategies and techniques for students who learn differently. Students will build academic performance through specific skill and strategy development. Lewis & Clark College in Portland, OR, is offering a two-week summer residency program for students completing grades 8 through 12. It is June 26-July 8, 2011. The mind discovers the world and creates meaning for itself through language. This program explores the relationship between writing, thinking, and learning. Louisiana State University Performing Arts Academy is where passions becomes greatness. June 6-11 LSU will offer an Honors Chamber Winds Camp that is designed for the highly motivated musician who aspires to a position of musical leadership in his/her program. From June 6-July 22 private lessons with an LSU faculty member is available for the following instruments: piano, jazz piano, organ, voice, harp, flute, saxophone, clarinet, violin, viola, cello, double brass, guitar, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, horn, trombone, tuba, percussion. Marist College (NY) Pre-College Program for upcoming Juniors and Seniors (July 10-23)--the fields they are offering: Business, College Writing, Criminal Justice, Environmental Science, Digital Movie Making, Fashion, Game Design, Spanish, Sports Communication, Theatre. Go to www.marist.edu/precollege to learn more. Maritime Venture (A Maritime Youth Career Camp)--You will experience Meet captains, pilots, tankermen, able seamen, and other mariners. Naval Academy STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) Program is in its 2nd year. If you are serious about attending the Naval Academy, you MUST apply for this. STEM is held in three sessions. Approximately 375 total students from around the US will be accepted to STEM. All students selected to participate will receive a full scholarship to attend this academic summer program, but will be responsible for providing their own transportation to and from the Naval Academy. Northwestern State University Advanced Program for Young Scholars is a three-week residential program for gifted and talented students entering grades 8-12. Partial need-based financial aid is available. Students will receive challenging academics with fun and creative social activities. Courses may include: Creative Writing, Computer Programming, Film Studies, Mathematics, Sciences, Games, Puzzles, and Logic, Folklore and Folklife, Intro to Criminalistics. L'academie De France is a program that gives students the fullest possible experience of French life and culture. The program is based in the beautiful, historical, and culturally rich city of Montpellier, with field trips to such places as Nimes and Carcassonne, and then travel to Paris for the three day finals of the program. -

SEAP (Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program) is for high school students who are interested in science and engineering and are looking for an apprenticeship next summer. SEAP is an Office of Naval Research sponsored and funded program. They want to expose students to Navy projects and programs. Participants receive hands-on experience in the fields of engineering, science, and computers in a reserach and development and test and evaluation environment. Students experiment with a technical career and learn about other types of careers that are available within the Carderock Division. The selected students are placed into a wide variety of scientific and engineering fields with mentors who are scientists, engineers, and technicians. Their mentors work with high school students during the summer to give them a first-hand understanding of professional methods to foster their desire to pursue college level training that will lead to careers in science and engineering. In order to be eligible for the SEAP Program, students must be US citizens, enrolled in high school, have completed 9th grade, and be at least 16 years of age by the beginning of the program. Students will spend 8 weeks during the summer doing research or working on a specific technical project. The stipend for studrnts will be $3075 for the 8 weeks. Southern Methodist University is offering two programs this summer: Talented & Gifted and College Experience. Get a jumpstart on your future and become a university student for three weeks in the Talented and Gifted Program. Take college-credit and challenging noncredit courses designed to stretch thinking and learning. SMU's College Experience offers students the opportunity to earn six hours of college credit while living on campus with peers who share your passion for fun and learning. In 2 weeks you get to do 3 shows with 3 different directors. Where else can you get that? You can participate in one of two intensive workshops held simultaneously: -
Workshop A: Acting and Characterization--Every student will perform in a One-Act Play, a Ten-Minute Play, and a Period and Style Scene. Also, they will attend sessions in acting, voice, movement and characterization. Performances will be held the last three days of the workshop. -
Workshop B: Technical Theatre and Design--Depending on interests, students will receive instruction in scenery, costume, make-up, sound, lighting and stage management. In addition, they will be the designers and technical support for the performed plays and scenes. Students will live in air-conditioned dormitories and study at the Griffith Fine Arts Building on the SFA campus. Recreational activities such as movie night, theme parties and dances will be held during the workshop. These workshops are open to 2011-2012 high school seniors, juniors and sophomores. The workshops run: Sunday, July 17 through Saturday, July 30, 2011 NEW! St. John's 2012 College Summer Academy -- A Great Week with Great Books--wants students to get a tast of freedom this summer. Spend a week (or two) exploring great ideas with other high school students. Modeled on the St. John's Program, the Summer Academy offers participants a rich experience reading and discussing original texts in small discussion classes (tutorials and seminars) with faculty members experienced in guiding thoughtful and lively conversations. Texas A&M University 2011 Governor's School in Arts & Humanities for Urban Leadership: This is an innovative summer program for rising juniors and seniors. It runs from June 5-June 24. It's a three week, intensive residential summer educational opportunity that includes trips to area museums, theatre arts performances, visiting artists, film and digital media projects, and four dynamic college-level courses. It is FREE! This program will intentionally seek a diverse pool of high achieving applicants from around the state of Texas, including students from all racial, ethnic, cultural, socio-economic, linguistic, geographic, and gender groups. The Junior Statesmen Summer School is seeking 9-11th graders who have a passionate interest in politics and current events. The University of Alabama 2012 Capstone Business Leadership Academy wants ambitious high school students who are interested in pursuing a career in business. Some of the seminars and workshops include: CPA’s in the FBI; Lunch with an Entrepreneur; Personal Selling Workshop; The Commodity Exchange Game, etc. Rising seniors who have a GPA of 3.4, a 27 ACT, 1210 SAT, or 140 PSAT qualify. The University of Alabama 2012 Accounting Career Awareness Program--This program is for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in accounting/finance who come from an ethnically diverse background. The primary objective of the ACAP is to increase the number of high school students from underrepresented ethnic groups to attend college and major in accounting. The University of Alabama 2012 Student Introduction to Engineering (SITE): UA's College of Engineering hosts the SITE summer program for rising high school juniors and seniors who are interested in science, math, and engineering. The University of Chicago is offering Summer Language Study June 20-August 19, 2011. Earn up to a year's worth of language credit. Gain an edge for language requirements and placement exams (3, 6, or 9-week intensive sessions). The University of Houston Bauer College of Business is offering the 2011 Bauer Summer Business Institute. This is a three-day event designed to develop leadership skills, set career goals and discover the real world of business in Houston through experiential learning, training, and site tours. The Washington Workshops Foundation is inviting students to join their 2010 International Study Tour, the Global Awareness Seminar Series: China. The United States Military Academy will host two Summer Leaders Seminars in June 2012. Only 800 juniors will be invited nationwide. The University of Texas McCombs School of Business and the Texas Exes: Subiendo is a five day intensive leadership academy dealing with issues facing the State's next generation of leaders. The academy will take place June 17-21 on the UT Austin campus and is open to current high school juniors who will be seniors in fall of 2012. There is NO COST to attend. Students will move away from the traditional classroom experience by participating in role-playing exercises centered around issues important to the future of Texas; interacting one-on-one with business, political, and community leaders and experts from around the state; and developing skills to take their ideas and turn them into reality. The University of Texas at Austin's School of Architecture offers a Summer Academy in Architecture. This is an intensive 3-week introductory program that prepares students for academic and professional pursuits in architecture through the development of an individual body of work in design and through exposure to prominent academics and professionals. Each student participating in the program is assigned an individual workspace in the School of Architecture studios. Students range from 17 to older adulthood. The Washington Workshops arranges Congressional internships on Capitol Hill or politically related office assignments throughout our nation's capital. The primary component of this Advanced Workshops Seminar is a three to six week internship in either a Congressional office (Senate, House, Committee), a Gubernatorial State office, and Executive Branch (department or agency) office, a political party affiliated organization, in an international organization or a public policy organization (lobbyist, non-profit, think tank). Workshops personnel serve as residential mentors at the university throughout the program, around the clock. Young Ambassadors Program (Y.A.P.) is organized by the Smithsonian Latino Center and underwritten by Ford Motor Company Fund. It is a national, interdisciplinary leadership program for high school students gifted in the arts, sciences or humanities. The mission of the program is to foster the next generation of Latino leaders in these areas. It consists of two components: -
a one-week, all expenses paid training seminar at the Smithsonian Institution, and -
a paid internship at a recognized museum or cultural organization in local communities across the United States and Puerto Rico. Upon completion of the five-week program, students will receive a $2,000 stipend. To apply, to go www.latino.si.edu/education. The deadline is April 8, 2011 to apply.
