These lists of people were accepted between 1898 and 1914 by the Dawes Commission as members of the five civilized Indian tribes: Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickawaw and Seminole. Helpful hints for this process: - One way to prove lineage is by full birth certificates. When ordering these birth certificates from the state, make sure you choose for Indian membership or they will send you the regular birth certificate and the membership boards will not accept this.
- It can take four to six months to obtain your Certificate Degree of Indian Blood (CDIB).
- For many years the Indian nations would only recognize heritage if you were a certain percent--this is not the case anymore for some tribes. If you can prove the amount of Indian blood that they require, then you can obtain your CDIB.
- You can only be a member of one tribe. It is good to research all the tribes you are affiliated with because each tribe awards scholarships differently.
- A student can receive money from colleges and from their tribe.
