University of North Texas--They want students to learn about a program they have called the Emergency ADministration and Planning Program (EADP). If you recall the events such as the Sept. 11 attacks, the Indian Ocean tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina, there are communities across the country that face emergencies and disasters regularly. Emergency management is the art and science of coordinating personnel and equipment to reduce threats to people and property, and responding to minimize damage when disasters occur. Emergency managers are busy before, during, and after disasters to protect their communities. The EADP program is strongly grounded in the natural and social sciences, and the rigorous, interdisciplinary character of the program means that students receive an education that is wide-ranging and flexible but that also offers the advantages of a well-established career path. Their current students participated (Feb. 2010) in an aviation disaster exercise and in a tornado exercise. The group also participated in an epidemic exercise that earned them some $4,000 for scholarships. This program requires an internship, and students work in local emergency management agencie, fire departments, corporations, and non-profits. Apart from getting ground-level experience, students join a close-knit network of alumni and public officials, and often contacts made during the internship lead to employment after graduation. Graduates are active and engaged around the country with a strong desire to make their communities safer and more healthful. If you would like to learn more about this program, contact Sudha Arlikatti, the program coordinator, at sudha.arlikatti@unt.edu.
