Naviance --

CLHS is in the early stages of implementing Naviance, a college planning software package to enhance our college guidance service.  The Class of 2013 has been given access to Naviance (in November) to explore the personality and career assessments and to take surveys which will help Mrs. Brennan prepare for Junior Conferences that will begin in January.  The sophomore class will be introduced to some components by February which include college search and planning.  The Freshman class will be introduced to some components later 2nd semester. 

University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center

Their 2012 Summer Research Programs offer exciting summer research opportunities for both graduating senior high school students and high school teachers. 

  • The Carl B. & Florence E. King Foundation 52nd Annual High School Summer Program in Biomedical Sciences--It's an 8 week session:  June 4, 2012-July 27, 2012.  Application deadline is February 17, 2012.  Participants in the program receive a stipend of $1,000 for local students. 
  • The Michael J. Ahearn 27th Annual Summer Workshop for HIgh School Science Teachers--It's a two-week session:  July 16, 2012-July 27, 2012.  The application deadline is April 16, 2012.

MISS HOUSTON/MISS HOUSTON TEEN

An informational meeting will be held January 29th at the Hilton Houston Post Oak Hotel Ballroom at 2:00 PM for potential contestants that would like to learn more about the pageant or they can contact Denise Waters O'Brian, the Director, at denise@baystarproductionsinc.com or 713-882-2019 for more information.  You can also go to their website at www.misshoustonpageant.com to find the entry form, etc.  The pageant is April 6-7, 2012.

Do you SAVY?

Jay Batten is the SAVY coordinator at Moody Gardens®.

SAVY, Society for the Advancement of Volunteer Youth, offers youth ages

14-17 the opportunity to volunteer within the community while gaining experience in a variety of career fields.

 

As a SAVY Volunteer, students will have the opportunity to work side by side with their Naturalists, work with animals in the touch tanks, provide guests with information about Moody Gardens®, assist staff with various duties and responsibilities and attend continuing education courses such as a marine biology class where they go collecting specimens with the Aquarium Curatorial staff. Volunteers are required to volunteer 24 hours in June, 24 hours in July, and 12 hours in August.

Do your kids want to become a police officer?

The Harris County Sheriff's Explorer Program gives young adults the opportunity to explore a career in law enforcement by working with deputies.  It's open to teenagers and young adults between the ages of 14 and 21.  Student participants get a first-hand look at what it takes to be a law enforcement officer and decide early on whether it is a career they want to pursue.  If you are interested, please contact Sergeant Joseph Blendermann, Program Coordinator, at 713-697-6304. 

The First Tee at Houston Oaks

Teaching life skills through the game of golf, this Non-Profit youth development program just down the road from Concordia is offering a service opportunity to high school students. Golf knowledge is not required and students would work hands-on with participants during classes; amny different times and classes are offered. Contact Amy Walker at (281) 459-8738.

Academic Services 

Concordia Lutheran High School’s Special Services exists to assist students with special learning needs, providing families and teachers information, evaluations, resources, and compensation strategies.  This program strives to aid and support teachers and to enable students to learn in a mainstream environment.  A modified curriculum is not available.  The school is not professionally prepared or equipped to effectively help students with certain learning disabilities or certain attention disorders which inhibit the educational process.  If needed, students may receive a full individual evaluation to determine eligibility for services.  Accommodations may include:

  • Oral administration of tests
  • Extended time for tests
  • Separate room to take tests
  • Assistance in study and organizational skills
